FIRBACK : I . A deep survey at 175 μ m with ISO , preliminary results

چکیده
FIRBACK is a deep survey conducted with the ISOPHOT instrument aboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at an effective wavelength of 175 μm. We present here results we have obtained on the first field, the so-called Marano1 which covers around 0.25 square degree. We find that the source density for objects with a flux above 200 mJy exceeds the counts expected for sources found in the IRAS deep surveys with a similar flux by about an order of magnitude. Such an excess was expected on the basis of the high far infrared background detected with the FIRAS and DIRBE instruments aboard the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE). These sources are likely to be redshifted infrared galaxies. The steep number counts indicate strong cosmological evolution in this population. The detected sources account for only 10 % of the cosmic IR background. An extrapolation of the counts down to about 10 mJy would be needeed to account for the whole background at this wavelength.

FIRBACK II. Data Reduction and Calibration of the 170 μm ISO Deep Cosmological Survey
We present the final reduction and calibration of the FIRBACK ISOPHOT data. FIRBACK is a deep cosmological survey performed at 170 μm. This paper deals with the ISOPHOT C200 camera with the C160 filter. We review the whole data reduction process and compare our final calibration with DIRBE (for the extended emission) and IRAS (for point sources). The FIRBACK source extraction and galaxy counts ...
متن کاملSub - mm and near - IR observations of galaxies selected at 170 μ
We present results from JCMT sub-mm observations of sources selected from the ISO FIRBACK (Far-IR BACKground) survey, along with UKIRT near-IR imaging of a sub-sample. This gives valuable insight into the brightest ∼10% of galaxies which contribute to the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB). We estimate the photometric redshifts and luminosities of these sources by fitting their Spectral Energy Di...
متن کاملThe Firback 175µm Survey
The FIRBACK project is a collaboration of eight institutes aimed at using long wavelength surveys with ISO to uncover the nature of the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background. We have surveyed nearly 4 sq. deg. in three regions in the northern and southern hemispheres with the ISOPHOT instrument on ISO, using the 175µm filter. As reported by Puget et al. (1998) and Reach et al. (these proceedings), the...
متن کاملISOPHOT 95 μ m observations in the Lockman Hole
We report results from a new analysis of a deep 95 µm imaging survey with ISOPHOT on board the Infrared Space Observatory, over a ∼1 deg 2 area within the Lockman Hole, which extends the statistics of our previous study (Rodighiero et al. 2003). Within the survey area we detect sixty-four sources with S/N> 3 (roughly corresponding to a flux limit of 16 mJy). Extensive simulations indicate that ...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor First detections of FIRBACK sources with SCUBA
The FIRBACK (Far InfraRed BACKground) survey represents the deepest extensive 170 μm images obtained by the ISO satellite. The sources detected comprise about 10% of the Cosmic IR Background (CIB) seen by COBE, and, importantly, were observed at a wavelength near the peak of the CIB. Detailed follow-up of these sources should help pin down the redshifts, Hubble types, and other properties of th...
